Entry n º 23: Gun Control.

Due to the high increase of violent crimes that affects our society, gun control has become a current issue nowadays. The debate has sprung up because of the acquisition of guns, especially the illegal kind, has also increased.
There is a general feeling of insecurity among the population because anybody can get a gun either legally or illegally. In this way, criminals are able to acquire great numbers of guns illegally, and influenced by the effectes of drugs they can kill many innocent people. Added to this is the fact that neither the action of the police forces nor the current gun control policies have been enough to prevent and combat crime as a result more and more individuals are buying guns in order to bring security to their families. But one important problem of this situation is that many fatal accidents have ocurred, such as the cases of innocent people who were mistaken for thieves and were killed by some frightened householder.
One way of changing this horrible reality would be the application of a “Zero tolerante policy” in what respects to the sale and purchase of guns. This control should be equally applied to the boaring and keeping of every type of guns. One decisive aspect in the application of proper gun control would be governmental action, because the government has the power to change the persent legislation on this matter, and to appoint more control organisms in order to ensure the population’s safety. But all this work must also be accompanied by alternative policies as for example the interchanging of guns for money, that has been successfully applied in our country.
In conclusión, the rising insecurity that everyday worries our society, and makes people fear for their lives could find a solution in new gun control policies, such as the mentioned above.
